Terra Cylce Donations from our Juice Pouch/Glue Stick Recycling Program

As our school year closes out, I wanted to let all Green Team members know about our recycling efforts this year.
We were able to recycle 27,063 juice pouches and 1,144 glue sticks!  Thanks to all members who gave up a part of their recess to go around and collect glue sticks and sort through juice pouches.  It's a messy job and I am so grateful to all who were willing to take on this service to our school.
Each month I mail the glue sticks and juice pouches you collect to Terra Cycle.  Then we are awarded a dollar value to redeem for their products or to redeem as donations for charities.    Of the 27,063 points we earned this year, we voted to spend 13,000 on various charities.  We are going to save the rest and possibly purchase some supplies for our school next year.

The charities we chose for the 2012-2013 school year are:

CleanWater.org: Provide clean water for 5  people in Kenya for 1 year

CarbonFund.org:  2 tonne of carbon emissions removed from the atmosphere

Heifer International 10 honeybees each to 5 families struggling to survive in Uganda

Sandy Hook Elementary: 500 points towards their brigade.  Sandy Hook joined Terra Cycle this past year.  They haven’t been able to recycle since moving to their temporary school location.  They want to rejoin the program once their new school is build, but need encouragement to start the program again.

Thank you to ALL Green Team members who volunteered their service for paper and plastic recycling as well.  I will have those numbers for you in the fall!

I wish all our current fifth graders well in sixth grade.  I hope you will continue your service at Gaithersburg Middle School or wherever you go.......be sure to come back to help for SSL hours as well!

I cannot wait to welcome all our current third and fourth grade members to our club. For now, enjoy your summer!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,
Ms. Hudson :)

Congratulations Green Team!

Our Green Team has been chosen to be featured in a 30 second commercial on Nickelodeon!  Nickelodeon contacted Ms. Hudson about our bottle cap art project.  They wanted to feature the Green Team as part of the Big Green Help.  Students in the Green Team were photographed this week and our commercial will air on the Nickelodeon networks beginning on April 22 (Earth Day!).

For more information about the BGH, visit:

Our next Green Team meeting will be on Tuesday, April 10.  We will have pizza to celebrate our hard work and begin preparations for our cafeteria mural!

First Day of Green Team

Today is our first after school meeting. Gabby and Elizabeth have been working hard to separate our bottle caps and lids by color. Our recyclers have been doing a fantastic job recycling juice pouches and paper.
We will have three new helpers this year with Green Team: Mrs. Dynda, Mrs. Knolmayer and former LES student and Poolesville High Senior, Alexandra Robbins. Today we will discuss our carbon footprint and how we can make a difference at home and school.
Please join us each Tuesday from 3:45-4:30 in Ms. Hudson's room.

Coming Soon: Courtyard/Grounds Cleanup on Sunday, November 6th.

Exciting Project for 2011-2012

Hey Green Teamers!

I hope the summer is finding you well-rested and that you are enjoying yourself. I just wanted to show you a cool project idea that Mrs. Knolmayer, Mrs. Barnhart and I are interested in working on this year. This is just one example of bottle cap art:

We will need your help. Please start collecting bottle caps and any other container lids so that we will be ready to get started at our first meeting.

I can't wait to get started!

Love,

Ms. Hudson :)

Green Team Updates

Although our Green Team is not meeting after school anymore, we are very busy still during the school day.
Teams continue to monitor energy use throughout the school. Other teams collect paper recycling to help out our building services staff. We even began collecting plastic bottles and cans this year.
We are really excited about next year's BIG project. Start saving lids that you are finished with. We are going to reuse them and design a new artscape for our hallways.
I am looking forward to another successful year on the Green Team in 2011-2012.
Thank you to ALL our fifth graders who were a part of our club. I can't wait to hear from you in middle school.
Love,
Ms. Hudson
